I dated a barista for a little while. He was a coffee snob, [a chuckle] I'm not, but I'm on a mission to try every drink on every menu in every cafe here.

[He orders his drink, and he'll pay for Chris's once he's ordered, too.]

What's back home like for you?

That sounds like a long mission. Good luck in your epic quest.

[He goes ahead and orders the espresso with nothing else to it. For Ra’ah’s sake. He nods his thanks to Jesus.]

Ah…the dreaded question. No offense. I come from Toril, the continent of Faerun, in the Moonsea region. Does that tell you enough to know the story might be longer than you think?

Most of my loved ones here seem to come from ‘Earth, but with this change’ I’ve yet to find another who knew the lands I do. I’m lucky enough there’s a few here who know my gods.

[No, none of that is remotely familiar.] I'm guessing there's more history there than you can even tell, yeah. I'm lucky; I have two people here from the same Earth I'm from. Rosita Espinosa and Brandon Carver.

[Their drinks are called and Chris goes to pick his up and pauses a second too long in doing so, but then smooths back into a the polite and easy manner he'd walked in with by his next breath.]

Over here looks good.

[He leads them to a small table for two, plenty of time to decide he has no intention of bringing up Rosita helping him, not even to a friend of hers from home. oo many potential ears even here and he'd promised. Chris takes a sip of his drink once they've settled and nods.]

I know Carver, obviously, with his position in the club. He was also brought to a party I hosted as a plus one, got to have a better talk with him then. Rosita I'm familiar enough with, she's contracted to one of my partners here.

Oh, Jacob, yeah. [It's a small world after all...]

What do you know about my world? Has Carver ever said?

[He nods...and then curses himself a little. Rosita had told him, not Carver, but...]

Not much, if I'm honest. It's an Earth, one with zombies but it's like a...sickness? It's less the dead given energy in the flesh without a soul and more like the body not realizing it's meant to rest at the end. Like the energy never got a chance to leave.

And it's in all of you, back home at least, and been that way for a number of years.

[It sounds like a lot more than Carver would normally share, which is interesting. He knows Rosita pulled Chris out of the Zoo, that she did it for Jacob, but not how long they spent together after, so he has no idea if she would have gone into it.

Either way it saves him the trouble of having to recap it all.]

Yeah, that's the long and short of it. The three of us are cured here, at least.

So you can raise the dead?

[He gives a small nod and takes a sip of his espresso.]

I can raise dead into undead, a left over gift from my first god, and raise dead into proper living once more. A boon of my lady and current god. Though....neither of which work here. They've got an odd strangle on death, if you haven't come across it yet. You can't raise anyone, yet no one can stay dead either.

Yeah...I've heard that. [He believes it, obviously, he just can't quite get his head around it.]

Which of your powers do work here?

Most of the rest. There's a wide range of what I can do. Necrotic magics, controlling and damaging undead, an array of healing, various buffs to improve a person's physical or mental abilities, hallowing ground, making holy water...a lot. Clerics are meant to cover a wide arrange of gaps in a fight.

[He reaches for the obsidian raven skull on a chain around his neck that rests against his chest.]

For you, I'd been thinking a spell called Protect against Evil and Good. It'd make it much harder for a vampire to make an attack against you, make your skin a bit stronger and your reflexes a touch higher in their presence. It's a little more subtle than the spell that would make them sick to be near you, I'd think.

Makes me wish we had clerics back home.

[He listens to the idea and nods]

That's kind of what I was hoping for. I don't need anything that goes into effect when things are peaceful; just something in case of emergency. Subtle.

I'm impressed.

... Do you think you could make two?

Oh you don't want me to go into that, I've built up so many opinions about the mismanagement of every Earth I've heard of.

[Religiously speaking, at least.]

But, yes, I can do two. It's got to have a stone as a focus, so I'll work on preparing those and setting them, gives you a week or so to decide how you want it set. Necklace, bracelet, ring, a charm to attach to something else, I suppose? As long as it can hold a stone setting, it can be made. If there's a specific item you have you want it set in, I'll need that too.

[He pauses and cocks his head to the side a bit.]

Is this second one for your friend and do you intend to tell them what it does?

Yes, and yes. It's for Rosita. She has even more reason to need protection than I do.

I think a bracelet for both of us.

[It seems like a really practical way to hold onto a charm]

Well...yes, we're agreed on that.

Very well, a bracelet I can do, Got an idea for both already. Give me a week or so? I'll have them to you. All you'll need to do is give a thought to activate it.

Any other magic concerns you got in mind I might aid in?

[What questions does he have? A million. But the most important one is:] Can it be taught?

Well, it's sort of part of what I'm meant to be doing, were we back in my world, so I'll take the brush of normalcy and excuse to be useful.

[Chris reaches for his drink to have the last of it and runs his other hand back through his hair.]

Do you mean the magic itself? The spell? No. My magic comes from the Raven Queen herself, it's not something picked up from a book. If you just meant the activation for the charm, then yes. Ostensibly, anyone you give the bracelet too will be able to use its properties if they know how.

[the business part of this meeting is over but he can't help his instant, vivid curiosity]

The Raven Queen? Is she a goddess?

[He nods.]

The goddess of death and souls passed in my world and a couple others, to my knowledge. She's a neutral force, focused on the shepherding of souls and not one to tolerate the undead on principle.

What do you mean? What does she do to them when you find the undead?

Kill them. Well, she expects me and those who serve her to kill them. Undead where I come from are flesh made to rise again because spirits have been shoved into them to make them move in case of zombies. In case of vampires, they're the dead who haven't given their souls over as they should.

Is it strange getting to know vampires here, then? You work with Grayson; how did that go?

Tumultuous to start, I'll admit. [And complicated, but that's not public information.]

And as to how it is...imagine getting to be close personal friends with a zombie who still had its mind. All your instincts telling you to be wary, to be prepared, especially when it'd be you or them in any other case back home...but hard to ignore a person being a person in front of you in most cases. I try to judge them no different than I would another, especially seeing as we've all little choice but to coexist here.

That's what I want: peaceful coexistence. I realize sometimes that's not always possible thanks to this place just...being this place, though.

It's not so hard as it could be, most times, though. So long as all remember everyone here's a person and respects that, if not them, then they're sailable waters.

I'm curious, though...I assume you want the bauble out of caution, not malevolence, so...is the caution born from your background with undead or from the feel you get off the person themselves?

Yeah. I've spent so much time fighting the dead, I just-

It's a precaution for the times this place takes away choice.
